Community School of Naples (CSN) is committed to fostering student social and emotional development concurrent with academic growth. We do this by incorporating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into our curriculum. SEL is a process that equips students with knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to become healthy, balanced, and independent adults. The educational institute CASEL (Collaborative Association for Social and Emotional Learning) defines social emotional competencies as the ability to “develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve personal and collective goals, show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.” (CASEL 2021)

Research shows that academic scores average 11 percentile points higher in schools where an SEL curriculum has been implemented. A 2019 Global Talent Trends study showed that 92% of employers rated “soft skills” as more important than technical skills. These “soft skills” include adaptability, communication, time management, emotional intelligence, respect for diversity, strong work ethic, and growth mindset.

Community School of Naples has adopted principles of RULER, a preK-12 program developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. The RULER approach is designed to systemically promote emotional intelligence and will be used in three divisions of the school (lower school, middle school, and upper school). 

As community stakeholders - teachers, students, staff, parents, caregivers, and volunteers- are involved in ongoing planning, implementation, reflection, and continuous improvement so that the learning environment is one that addresses every aspect of child development.

With SEL purposefully integrated into academic learning, CSN embraces the opportunity to help your child develop every aspect needed for a joyful, healthy, and purpose-filled life.

RULER is a systemic approach to SEL developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. RULER aims to infuse the principles of emotional intelligence into the immune system of PreK to 12 schools, informing how leaders lead, teachers teach, students learn, and families support students. RULER is an acronym for the five skills of emotional intelligence: Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, Regulating.
