Global Studies Programs

Along with the ability to excel in academics, athletics, and the arts, CSN students have the unique opportunity to develop into global citizens through our Global Studies Program (GSP). As our world has become smaller and more interconnected, being a global citizen and developing the skills of communicating, relating, problem solving, and adapting have become even more important. Through our classroom curriculum and study abroad opportunities, the Global Studies Program brings the world to CSN students, and sends CSN students to the world.
All this is encapsulated in the GSP's mission statement: “To Study and Experience Life in another culture with the goal of becoming Global Citizens."
The Global Studies Program is not just an add-on program or extra feature of Community School, but an integral part of the school’s DNA. In short, the GSP exists within and seeks to fulfill CSN's mission statement, particularly the goal to "focus on involved citizenship in the world at large.” This takes place in two key ways: At Home (CSN’s campus) and Abroad.

Global Studies is a whole-school endeavor that infuses our curriculum with global mindedness: beginning with world language instruction in the Lower School, expanding with the Global Exchange Program in the Middle School, and culminating with the advanced course offerings in the Upper School.

Along with our formal curriculum and classroom instruction, students at CSN have the benefit and opportunity of interacting with teachers and students from around the world. Many of our faculty bring their experiences of living, teaching, and visiting other countries into their daily classroom instruction.

Additionally, many students at CSN draw from a variety of backgrounds, nationalities, and languages, which adds to the overall experience of every CSN student. For instance, did you know that the Class of 2015 hailed from 9 countries and spoke 11 languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, German, French, Czech, Hebrew, Korean, Creole and Tagalog?

Global Exchange Program

With the foundation established in the early grades, students in grades 7 through 10 have an opportunity to participate in CSN’s Global Exchange Program, which is a partnership between CSN and several “sister schools” around the world. Each exchange has two components:

  1. Two weeks overseas, where CSN students travel abroad, live with a host family, and attend classes at a host school.
  2. Two weeks hosting, where CSN students welcome the same students into their homes and classes.

Through these opportunities, students build lifelong friendships and experience life in another culture with new customs and traditions, bringing to life what they have learned and studied while at CSN. So far, CSN has partnered with the following schools:

  • Beijing Number Four High School in Beijing, China
  • Bavarian International School in Munich, Germany
  • St. Stephen’s School in Rome, Italy
  • American School of Valencia in Valencia, Spain

School Year Abroad

Students in grades 11 and 12 wanting a longer-term overseas experience can apply to School Year Abroad (SYA), which enables students to either do a six-week summer stay or a year-long stay in the following countries:

  • China
  • France
  • Italy
  • Spain

As the only SYA member school in Florida, CSN students have a unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves into a culture, language, and country. During the 2015-16 school year, we have two students participating in SYA, one in France and one in Italy. For both of these students, this will be a truly life-changing experience.
