Summer  Honors Math Packets - READ DIRECTIONS FIRST

Please read this entire document. It will answer most of your questions.

Summer is a great time to rest and “recharge” your batteries. Hanging out, traveling, catching up on reading and favorite television programs … all are a must. Some students might attend academic or sports camps while others work. Whatever you choose to do, I hope that all your experiences are wonderful!

As much as “down” time is necessary, it also makes the cumulative learning process difficult. As such, the Upper School Math Department is asking you to complete a Summer Math Assignment. This work is required and will count as your very first grade of the new school year. You are asked to complete the assignment that reviews material from the class you just finished or the one most closely related to your most recently completed class.

The Summer Math Packets can be found on the CSN website. There are downloadable files, which you should print so that your solutions can be worked in the space adjacent to the problems.

You will be expected to turn in the printed packet and all detailed work when you return to school in August.  This assignment is worth the equivalent of five homework assignments and you will not receive full credit if the packet is incomplete or if you do not have supporting work for each question.

In order for you to keep your academic edge, the math department at CSN asks that you find approximately one hour per week for keeping your math skills sharp by working on the problem sets that have been compiled especially for you. Most questions can be done without the aide of a calculator.  All questions can be done without the aid of a graphing calculator.  Students should consider practicing with and without a graphing calculator.  Please begin working on questions at least once a week throughout the summer rather than waiting until the day before school starts to begin. Your grade will be based on completion, accuracy, and possibly an assessment given by your teacher during the first week of school.  Please give 100% effort so that the results are an accurate reflection of your individual strengths and weaknesses, but also so that the item analysis of the combined results for all students gives us a clear picture of what students are learning in our classes. Teachers will do an item analysis based on your strengths and needs and coordinate curriculum to help in maximizing this learning opportunity.

The “how” of summer math – please read carefully!

Completing the summer math assignment according to the instructions helps make this packet a valuable tool for your teacher when you return to school in August.

Getting assistance from friends or family is fine, but please make this your own work so that you can take advantage of this learning opportunity.  If using a tutor, please do not use the tutor to help you the first time you attempt the problem. You may certainly get help once you have attempted a problem!

Like anything else in education, the more you put into this, the more you’ll get out of it. Taking responsibility for one’s learning and applying what you have
learned in a more challenging critical thinking environment represents an opportunity to extend your knowledge. When you return to school in August, take the time to follow up with your teacher. They are willing to work with you to help you understand the concepts you struggled with as you worked through these packets.

**Students who are interested in Mu Alpha Theta:  We encourage you to check out the test bank at www.famat.org!  There are hundreds of practice tests for all divisions with detailed answer keys.
