Visual Arts

In the Lower School, while students are still developing their fine motor skills, they learn the basics of drawing by combining the eight basic shapes, color mixing and theory, introduction to famous artists, and ethnic arts and crafts from all over the world. The development of perception, use and care of materials and equipment, and long-range projects that enhance students' visual, motor and cognitive skills by looking, thinking and doing, are all emphasized in the Lower School.

Middle School art students are introduced to concepts, vocabulary, methods, history, and the relevance of art in the world. The faculty recognizes the physical and emotional changes that affect adolescents and provides structure within creativity. Courses at the Middle School level offer projects in a variety of media.

Through the study of various traditional and contemporary media, the Upper School Art Department's goal is to develop a young artist's technical abilities and personal vision. The CSN Visual Arts program strives to enhance the student’s creative skills, helping them develop strong personal portfolios. Available courses include: Digital Photography, Printmaking, Drawing and Painting, Advanced Placement Studio Art in both Drawing and Painting, as well as Digital Photography and Art History. The Art Department strives to awaken each student’s creative enthusiasm while building confidence in self-expression, design, and interpretation. Students' artistic talents are promoted through on-campus and off-campus art exhibitions. CSN offers many diverse and in-depth opportunities for the study of visual art. All Art Department teachers are professional artists in their fields, bringing unique styles and knowledge to the classroom. Revolving displays of student artwork are scheduled in CSN's Pfeil Art Gallery and elsewhere on campus throughout the school year, exhibiting inspiring examples of student creativity.
