LTJG Mary Carr (CSN ‘14 and USCGA ’19) is the Executive Officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Baranof stationed in Bahrain. As part of her responsibilities, Mary was driving the Baranof during an encounter with the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Monday. Her ship was involved in a standoff in which three small vessels swarmed two American ships operating in international waters in the northern Persian Gulf. The Iranian boats, which U.S. officials said were armed, approached the U.S. Navy patrol ship USS Firebolt and the U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat. The three Iranian fast-attack boats came within 70 yards of both ships. Crews of both U.S. ships issued multiple warnings, using radio and loudspeaker devices, but the Iranian vessels continued to maneuver close to both. Finally, the crew of the Firebolt fired warning shots, and the smaller Iranian vessels moved away, officials said.
