2021 Earth Day

The First Annual CSN All-School Earth Day celebration took place on our campus throughout the morning of Friday, April 23.  From 8:00-11:30 a.m. MS teachers organized a "Farmer's Market" under the big tent, which included booths from Sea Grant (a rep hosted a fish identification demonstration), Thrifty Garden (a master planter gave seed and gardening demonstrations and sold small plants), Rookery Bay (marine samples from the estuary), Eco Endeavors (shell identification), Coral Restoration Foundation, Barefoot Honey, Collier County Waste Recycling, Audubon Western Everglades, Florida Wildlife Federation, Big Cypress, Naples Compost, and many more.

Our MS Conservation Club assembled and sold plastic-free starter packs, which included eco-friendly laundry detergent, dishwasher soap, and other products.  The Naples Soap Company, locally owned by a past CSN parent, sold natural soaps, shampoos, and other products.  SCUBAdventures offered students from all divisions the opportunity to jump into our pool and try out breathing underwater.  They also hosted a Scuba Olympics featuring competitive games between our school's Scuba Gang certified members who have been involved in coral reef restoration.

In addition, a revolving schedule of 16 workshops and games on oysters, butterflies, the climate crisis, the Everglades, coral reefs, water conservation, yoga, and others were held.  Even a website was created just for this special day https://sites.google.com/view/csnearthday2021/home.  CSN teachers Ms. Stevens, Ms. Staber, Ms. MacLean, Ms. Stasik, and Ms. Potocki were the primary organizers behind this amazing event.  They deserve many kudos!

Many other projects throughout the school took place in honor of Earth Day.  Kindergartners did a writing activity about ways to show we love the Earth.  Some 1st grade students completed an Earth Day division and coloring activity.  Others planted lima beans, learned about Arbor Day, visited the Farmer’s Market and created posters.  Third graders created agamographs.  Students in 4th and 5th grade Chinese language classes learned the words in Mandarin for some plants and animals and collected leaves to create nature posters.  Two 7th graders in the Saving Southwest Florida elective created a plastic alternative presentation.  The US Environmental Club coordinated an event with the 10th grade class, where each advisory drew a different environment of the earth in the courtyard with chalk (swamp, desert, mountains, ocean, coastal, and forest).  Mrs. Rochette's advisory won the vote of best drawing, and each student received their own succulent plant as a prize.  Ms. Dunn's US marine science students staffed a table at the Farmer's Market with different paints, papers, markers, sponges, brushes, and fish stencils for LS students to create their own piece of art.  The whole morning brought all three divisions together to have fun, and to learn about the planet we call home.
