Students in the MS Chunky Blanket Elective classes came together to help the community while learning new skills.
The students in the classes, taught by Mrs. Briana Leschen, did a wonderful job making blankets, learning new stitches, designing care tags and reaching out to community organizations. After a lengthy discussion about the different people in the community that might benefit from their blankets and the organizations that serve those people, the students decided to donate the blankets to children at Naples Community Hospital and The Shelter for Abused Women and Children.
The students participated in a virtual presentation with NCH's Director of Nursing for Pediatrics and NICU as well as the Vice President of HR. The two explained different volunteer opportunities available at NCH, including the Volunteens Program, and how the blankets will be utilized. They also spoke to the students about the importance of community partnerships and helping those in need.
The students also met with representatives from The Shelter for Abused Women and Children. Students learned about the services offered by the shelter, how the shelter operates and their community outreach programs. The girls were excited to present their blankets, and the blankets were very well received. Mrs. Leschen is proud of her students.
"These young ladies have enriched the lives of others, bringing warmth and comfort at a time when it is needed most," she said.
