Adding Up Fun with the Sum Game

In sixth-grade math, the sometimes challenging concept of integer addition is turned into a fun and interactive activity called the "Sum Game."

This engaging exercise helped students deepen their understanding of adding positive and negative integers while fostering teamwork.

Here’s how it works: two students each hold a playing card on their forehead without seeing it. The cards represent integers, with black cards as positive numbers and red cards as negative numbers. A third student then announces the sum of the two integers, which is written on the classroom whiteboard. The challenge? The students holding the cards must figure out what integer they are holding based on the sum provided. Once they’ve guessed correctly, the students write the full addition equation on the whiteboard. This interactive approach allows students to practice integer addition in a collaborative and enjoyable setting, helping each other grasp the concept more effectively.

Mr. Calvin Colby describes the game as follows: "It makes learning about integers more enjoyable, but also reinforces the importance of peer learning and cooperative problem-solving. We’re looking forward to seeing more of these “lightbulb” moments as we continue to explore math through creative and engaging activities."
