Music
Music is the sovereign domain of education because rhythm and harmony
find their way to the soul.
- Plato
Music is an integral part of the human spirit, one of the measures of
civilization and a vital part of the school culture. We believe it is
important to provide opportunities for our children to develop musically
to the highest possible measure through the best of song literature, a
variety of instruments and performance groups, the highest quality
listening experiences, teaching skills, materials and activities
sequenced the way children learn. Our low teacher/student ratio is
extremely beneficial for music students of all levels.
In the Lower and Intermediate Schools, small classes meet two to three
times weekly to allow each child to sing, play instruments, or perform.
The curriculum offers strong integration of multi-cultural influences,
adjunct instructors are available for instrumental lessons and visiting
artists perform for children throughout each school year. Much of the
music for band is written or arranged by our own faculty, and band
directors perform instrument maintenance and repairs on campus.
In Middle and Upper Schools, a wide variety of music electives are
offered, providing performance opportunities throughout the year in
ensembles as diverse as jazz band, choir, string ensemble and steel
band. The students' musical talents are promoted through school and
community performances, and practice rooms are available to interested
students.
