Athletics
The school offers a comprehensive athletic program for both male and
female students in Middle School (grades 6-8) and Upper School (grades
9-12). CSN is a member of the Florida High School Athletic Association
and the Sunshine Athletic Conference. The Department of Athletics at CSN
is committed to being an integral part of the overall educational
experience offered by the school and its students.

CSN offers a
total of 30 interscholastic sports teams. Varsity teams offer the
students the opportunity to compete at the district, regional and state
level. Playing a varsity sport is a big commitment and requires
dedication during the season and in the off-season. The junior varsity
level gives the athlete the opportunity to refine his/her fundamental
skills and learn the more complex tactics and strategies in preparation
for future varsity play. The middle school sports program offers the
students the opportunity to develop fundamental skills and basic team
concepts.
Ideally, we would like middle school students to play
middle school sports exclusively; however, there are some situations
where it may be appropriate for a middle school student to play at a
higher level. There are many physical, social, emotional, and
psychological factors to consider when making this decision.
Considerations
include the following:
- Is there both a middle school and
upper school sport offered for the athlete during a particular season?
- Does
the upper school team need the athlete to fill out the roster or fill a
particular position on the team?
- Will the athlete’s talents
have a measurable effect on the performance of the team?
- Is the
athlete physically, socially, and emotionally mature enough to play at
the higher level?
If after reviewing the considerations, the
coach, parent, and athlete agree that it would be beneficial to move the
athlete up, the situation will be brought to the Athletic Director.
The Athletic Director will review all factors and make a final decision
on the status of the athlete.
Community School participates in
leagues that are competitive and not recreational in nature. Community
School does not guarantee playing time at the JV and varsity level.
Middle School teams provide more of an opportunity for playing time but
the playing time at the middle school level does not have to be equal.
It is possible at all levels that "cuts" will be needed to make the
number of players on a team manageable for both practices and games.
Participation
on any CSN athletic team is a distinct privilege to be earned, not a
universal right. This participation carries obligations with respect to
conduct, sportsmanship and academic performance. The Athletic office
requires a copy of a student's Birth Certificate along with an updated
Physical form and Parental Consent form before the student can
participate in the Athletic programs.
